By Marylin Kilsby
Behold, I am doing a new thing;
now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?
I will make a way in the wilderness
and rivers in the desert.
Isaiah 43v19 ESV
Whenever I read this verse, I always feel a sense of excitement. Although it is part of an Old Testament prophecy to Israel, it’s just as relevant to us as Christians. Sometimes our lives can feel a little humdrum, whether we’re at work, looking after a family or, having retired, just trying to keep on top of things at home. However boring we feel our lives can be, the Lord has promised us new things, new circumstances, throughout our life.
The new things may be different experiences, such as holidays or taking up a new hobby. Last year I started playing the recorder again, something which I hadn’t done in any depth since my early teens, which was rather a long time ago.
I’ve really benefitted from this, both in terms of keeping the little grey cells going and in joining a recorder group, hence meeting new people and, I hope, improving my playing.
More important, though, is that we seek the Lord for new things from Him. He is forever new and we can all get to know Him better. He can speak new things to us many ways, perhaps through the Bible, or through hymns and songs and through other people and also directly to us. He can even lead us in a completely new direction, such as by moving home or serving in a different way in church.
As the Lord says in the verse above, He will make a way, a path, even in a wilderness where it’s so easy to get lost. He can pour out water in a dry place, the desert, too. Nothing is impossible with God!
May we each know His refreshment, restoration and new things over the weeks and months ahead.
