“Oh. I should be able to sell your house within weeks”, the estate agent said to my friends over a year ago. Their home is well maintained, close to a station in London and also near a good school. They made enquiries about buying a property in their chosen location and were pleased to find that they would have a wide choice of suitable houses.
A year later, they still haven’t moved. It’s not from want of trying. They’ve had offers on their home that have fallen through. Houses in their new location that they really liked have become unavailable for various reasons. No wonder house buying and selling is one of the most stressful experiences one can have.
However, my friends know that God is in control. They’re not immune to the disappointments and delays but their roots go far deeper than their desire to move. They know that they will get the right house at the right time. They are aware that others have needed them to be in their present location for a while longer and this has lessened the stress considerably.
Waiting can be really tough, even if we are waiting for something joyful, as any child looking forward to their Christmas presents will tell you. We are in the season of advent now. Advent, according to Wikipedia, is “a season observed in many Western Christian churches as a time of expectant waiting and preparation for the celebration of the Nativity of Jesus at Christmas. The term is a version of the Latin word meaning ‘coming’”. Advent is more than this, though. Christianity.com explains that advent also looks forward in eager anticipation to the coming of Christ’s kingdom when he returns for His people.
As we wait and prepare for Christmas, let us also meditate on what joy we will experience when Jesus comes again!
Behold He comes, riding on the clouds
Shining like the sun at the trumpet call
Lift your voice, it’s the year of Jubilee
Out of Zion’s hill, salvation comes
(From the song “Days of Elijah”)
